Dear Students and Friends of the College,
One of the greatest thinkers of the Ancient World, Marcus Tullius Cicero, had the following to say about the academic field that we have come to call "The Humanities": "These studies are a spur to the young, a delight to the old: an ornament in prosperity, a consoling refuge in adversity; they are pleasure for us at home, and no burden abroad; they stay up with us at night, they accompany us when we travel, they are with us in our country visits". Cicero goes on to say that even if these areas of study were not to bear fruit and if we were only to gain pleasure from them, he still felt that this form of mental activity should be recognized as the highest and most worthy for the free-born person to engage in.
At Regent College we value the humanities, in particular the study of language and literature. We actively promote our students' engagement with language, the literature of the past and present, film, theatre, and other aspects of culture.
Our students and graduates know that it is worthwhile studying language and literature. Every year our college accepts 150 new candidates who want to read, write and think for themselves. These are abilities which are never out of date, especially in this age of pragmatic calculation and technological development. These abilities are the key to success in a whole range of fields.
Your time as a student at Regent College will test your abilities to the utmost. But the skills you develop here will stand you in good stead to face the professional and cultural challenges of the future.
I hope that you will get all that you can out of your years at Regent College. Education is a matter of intellectual give and take. Our teachers will ask a lot of you. I hope you, in turn, will ask much of them.
And now a word to our graduates,
Nemo sapiens, nisi patiens - No one is wise who is not also patient.
You have proved your abilities over the three years of your studies. You have met all the requirements set by our college. You should feel proud of yourselves. Congratulations! Best wishes for the future!.
